Chugalug (The Eskimo) - Kelloggs Corn Flakes mask (1950s) - cutout
This vintage “Chugalug” mask was issued on the back of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes boxes during the 1950s, part of a colorful series of cutout characters designed to entertain children at the breakfast table. Brightly printed and easy to punch out, these masks turned an ordinary cereal box into hours of imaginative play.
The “Chugalug” character reflects the mid-century tendency to draw from stereotyped portrayals of Arctic and Inuit peoples in popular culture. While the imagery is a product of its time, it remains an important artifact of postwar advertising and the way cereal companies tied their products to imaginative childhood adventures.
