Circus Clown - Ringling Bros Circus - Promotional Giveaway Paper Mask (1998)
This colorful paper clown mask was distributed as a promotional freebie by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1998, one of the final decades of the “Greatest Show on Earth.” Designed for children attending the circus, these masks were intended to be punched out and worn during performances, making unpunched, complete examples like this one much scarcer today.
The bright orange hair, oversized nose, and bold cartoon-style features reflect the circus’ long tradition of playful clown imagery. As Ringling Bros. officially closed its doors in 2017 after 146 years of operation, these later promotional items have taken on a new significance as souvenirs from the twilight years of the American circus era.
Measures: 8 x 8 inches
Date: 1998
Origin: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, promotional giveaway
Rarity: While not as old as cereal box masks of the mid-20th century, unpunched and preserved Ringling Bros. masks are becoming harder to find after the circus’ closure.
